My Goal

I am making every step count this February

This February, I am taking part in BrainWalk and walking, jogging or running - in barefoot shoes - as far as I can to improve my own health and wellbeing and help save lives!

I am raising money for the Encephalitis Society, a cause close to my heart - my dad died of it in 1981.

Encephalitis is a neurological condition that can be devastating. Here are five facts you may not know:

1. Encephalitis is inflammation of the brain.

2. It is caused by an infection or through the immune system attacking the brain.

3. Anyone can be affected by encephalitis – no matter their age, gender or ethnicity.

4. It has a high death rate and survivors are often left with an acquired brain injury and life-changing consequences.

5. In some cases, encephalitis can impact on mental health, causing difficult to deal with emotions and behaviours, and can lead to thoughts of self-harm and even suicide.

One person is diagnosed with encephalitis every minute across the world, and life for them and their loved ones will never be the same again.

Every donation I receive will go to the Encephalitis Society, helping accelerate understanding and awareness of encephalitis and ensuring that those affected by this serious neurological condition get the crucial help and support they need. Please help if you can.

Nearly done, but 350,000 target hit

Tuesday 28th Feb
Thanks again to the kind people who sponsored me - well, donated generously on the back of my lightweight walking challenge. I'm kind of amazed at how far I've walked in February, mostly only by making a few minor changes in lifestyle. I have gained a measure of mindfulness in the process, and even lost a couple of kg, and felt more balanced/resilient during a slightly stressful month. If I can do it and reap benefits, so can you. Try it and see?

No wonder my feet feel 'there'. As in, I'm aware I have feet...

Monday 20th Feb
Unexpectedly managed to hit 250,000 steps. Going to see if I can make 350,000 before February's out, for no other reason than it's a good excuse to get out in the sunshine during the day, and take in a bit of peace and quiet of an evening. The weather is so scarily mild that one might as well make the most of it while one can.

Well, that was unexpected...

OK, I'm /hugely/ indebted to the kind people who have thrown some money in the general direction of the Encephalitis Society on my behalf. I guess I'll keep walking, now that I've hit 150,000 steps. I've upped the counter to 250,000 - let's see how close we get... Many thanks!
